What is an Inflatable Paddle Board?

Inflatable paddle boards (also known as iSUPs) are a variant of traditional paddle boards that are designed to be inflated with air rather than being made out of solid materials. iSUPs are a popular choice amongst paddle-boarding enthusiasts as they offer the perfect balance between performance, ease of use, portability, and cost.

Differences Between Inflatable and Hard SUPs

Though inflatable and hard SUPs have a similar shape and serve the exact same purpose, they are vastly different from each other. Some of the areas where both types of paddle boards differ include:

Durability & Performance

An inflatable SUP board is often more durable than a hard SUP, which is far more susceptible to damage from impact, especially if it's made out of epoxy or fibreglass. Tidal Rave’s inflatable paddle boards are made out of premium double-layer drop-stitch technology and UV-resistant PVC. As a result, all our paddle boards are more rigid, durable, and incredibly lightweight.

In regards to performance, Tidal Rave’s inflatable paddle boards are also extremely versatile in the sense that they can be used in various water conditions. They are also a great choice for both beginners and intermediate paddlers.

Portability & Storage

Since inflatable paddle boards can be deflated, they are far more convenient to transport from one place to another. Some of our customers even take their inflatable paddle boards abroad, which can be a costly endeavour if you try to do the same with a solid paddle board. In regards to storage, once deflated, your paddle board can be neatly tucked away in the shed or in the attic without taking up too much space.

Weight Capacity

Inflatable paddle boards tend to have a higher weight capacity than their hard counterparts. As a result, they are often much more versatile and accommodating to a range of passengers. In the case of our inflatable paddle boards, they can accommodate paddlers of up to 170 kilograms or 370 lbs.

Cost & Maintenance

Inflatable SUPs are more affordable than hard SUPs. They also require significantly less maintenance, such as waxing, repairs, and cleaning, which can be costly and add up over time.

Should You Keep Your Paddle Board Inflated?

That’s up to you to decide. Keeping your paddle board inflated will make it more awkward for transportation and storage. However, when you’re ready to hit the water and go on your next adventure, you won’t have to spend time inflating it.

If you’re concerned about damaging your paddle board over time from the constant inflating and deflating, don’t worry. Your paddle board will be as good as new every time you inflate or deflate it.
